blog-documentBecause NPD team members are highly motivated by goals and objectives established by themselves for the product specifications(i), you’ll want to involve the cross-functional team in all of the planning stages for the project.  Of course, these key resources have already been involved in the brainstorming and ideation sessions.  Another way to ensure NPD team engagement is through the Product Innovation Charter (PIC).

At the Idea Incubator, we’ve been spending the past few weeks taking a deep dive into three best practices for innovation success – ideas, teams, and customers.

You might want to learn more about ideas in Ideas Should Be Screened, Everybody has Ideas, and Ideas Come from New Experiences, or teams in Teams Can Help Innovation and Teams are People, Too!

This week, we’re taking a detailed look at how the experiences of the New Product Development (NPD) team can influence the new product outcome.  In particular, teams that use guiding charters, such as the PIC, are more aligned with strategic goals and enact a unified vision.

Critical Chain Project Management

Spanish DictionaryCritical Chain Project Management (CCPM) is a method of scheduling that utilizes the Theory of Constraints popularized by Eli Goldratt.  In CCPM, scheduling takes into account limited (critical) resources when creating the project schedule and includes explicit buffers of time to protect the project completion date.

Theory of Constraints

Spanish DictionaryTheory of Constraints, or TOC, is a management philosophy indicating that at any point in time, any complex system will have constraints, or bottlenecks, that limit the system’s ability.  TOC is credited to Eli Goldratt and involves a 5-step process to identify the bottlenecks or constraints and to work to improve all other system components that impact the constraint.

In project management, the Theory of Constraints is often implemented through Critical Chain Project Management, a method for scheduling project tasks.

business teamwork - business men making a puzzleBest practices clearly show that teams add value to carrying out innovation efforts.  A recent best practice survey demonstrates that nearly 70% of firms use a formal, cross-functional process for new product development (NPD) projects, with the majority of those projects worked under the auspices of a separate NPD or project management department*

Teams are the second element of innovation best practices as we’ve been delving into the success of innovation over the past several weeks at the Idea Incubator.

Companies, communities, and volunteer organizations use teams to increase accountability, share responsibility, and improve productivity.

blog-dnaGreat ideas are inseparable from successful innovation.  Over the past few weeks, at the Idea Incubator, we’ve been taking a deep dive into idea generation as the first step of best practices for New Product Development (NPD), including:

  • Ideas,
  • Teams, and
  • Customers.

To date, we’ve discussed ideas should be screened and everyone has ideas.  This week, we’re taking a look at the varied experiences that people bring to the table to help grow a successful idea into a fruitful innovation.

Last week at the Idea Incubator, we started a series on ideas, teams, and customers.  These three arenas emphasize the best practices that lead to continued success in New Product Development (NPD).  So far, we’ve discussed the screening of ideas by using a portfolio management tool.  This week, we’ll take a look at the people who should be involved in a brainstorming session, helping to generate both quantity and quality ideas.

Innovation often is used as a buzzword.  Yet, true innovation is hard work and requires detailed attention to the ideas, teams, and customers of a firm to ensure success in the marketplace.

These three arenas are at the heart of best practices in all companies that repetitively and profitably deploy new products.  We’re going to spend the next few weeks at the Idea Incubator (sponsored by Global NP Solutions) taking a deep dive into these three key areas so you can learn and share how these themes of ideas, teams, and customers lead to successful innovation.  We’ll start with ideas.
